The Airline Above the Rest: Singapore Airline
Most people before the second world war traveled the world using trains and ships. The post-war era changed everything. Planes that were once used to bomb enemy targets or transport troops were now put to commercial use.
In 1947, a new airline was born in Southeast Asia. This company had its humble beginnings which has evolved to what it is today being one of the best airlines in the industry. This company that is known worldwide is Singapore airlines.
Years ago when it was still under British rule, the airline had a different name. It was called Malayan airways. After Singapore became independent the company changed the name of the airline to Malaysia-Singapore airlines.
The years did well for the company that allowed it to buy newer planes to add to its existing fleet. From propelled aircraft like the Fokker’s, this soon changed to those that had jet engines such as the Boeing 707’s and the 737’s.
The first transcontinental flight in 1971 made the company change its name once again to what it is known today as Singapore Airlines.
The airline industry saw a competition between two rival companies. The United States had Boeing while the Europeans had Airbus. The innovations these two companies led to the development of bigger planes such as the B747-400 and the Airbus A-300.
These planes were the top of the line back then and were designed to carry more passengers and fuel making it possible to do long haul flights. Singapore airlines was the first country in Asia and the world to buy these planes from both manufacturers and put it into service.
Towards the end of the 20th century, other things were upgraded such as the inflight communications and entertainment system of the aircraft. This meant that each passenger seat had its own TV monitor for the person to watch movies or listen to music. It also gave each passenger a telephone. Such amenities were only offered before to passengers in the first class cabin.
The start of the 21st century made this airline purchase a new set of planes. These are the Airbus A-380’s that will go into service some times in 2006. These are the biggest planes that the world has ever seen that can carry twice the passengers and cargo.
Presently, this company flies to more than 90 destinations in more than 40 countries. Part of its customer excellence provides passengers with free head set and drinks throughout the entire flight.
The company has tie-ups with other airlines and a frequent flyer program that rewards regular passengers for the continued patronage.
Even as the price of fuel and tickets has gone up, air travel continues to be the most popular form of transportation to get from one destination to the next. This was confirmed by a study that shows that the number of people flying has more than tripled in the past 20 years.
The many first’s that this company has done in a span of 60 years in operation is unparallel. It has gotten the admiration of other airlines in the industry that strive to follow the same example that Singapore airlines offers to its passengers.
From great inflight service to a wide choice of destinations to choose from, the company truly lives up to its name of being regarded as one of the best airlines in the world.
