India's Top Four Airlines

India is an Asian destination of history, culture and bargains! Here are four India airline companies that can take care of your travel.

Indian Airline

This is a government-owned airline serving mostly flights within the country. It was formed in 1953 as part of the country’s nationalization of the airline industry. In the end of 2005, the airline company dropped the word “Airline” from its official name and is now known simply as, “Indian.” This change, together with management reorganization is in preparation for a public offering of 20 – 25% of the company, later this year. Alliance Air is a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian and serves low-cost domestic flights out of New Delhi.

Air India

This is India’s flag carrier and Indian’s international counterpart. Post, nationalization of the airline industry it is now a majority-government owned corporation, but it traces its roots to private beginnings. In 1932, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and aviator and entrepreneur, bought a biplane and flew it across the country to carry mail. This prompted the formation of Tata Airlines, a subsidiary of Tata’s bigger business conglomerate, Tata & Sons, Ltd. However, the war would destroy most of the company’s assets. Post war, it became publicly listed company under the name Air India.

Two years later, the government bought a significant amount of the shares from the company with an option to increase their shares (posing for majority take-over) anytime afterwards. In return, Air India became the official flag carrier and only airline to server international flights. After five years (1953) the government took over the majority under its airline nationalization program. Eventually, the Tata Group (modern name of Tata & Sons, Ltd.) sold off all their shares.

This just in: The Ministries of Civil Aviation of India announced plans of merging Air India with Indian to strengthen the state’s bid against other low cost airline companies in India.

Air Deccan

After 40 years of exclusivity to the government, the India airline industry opened up to the private sector in 1993. Thereby emerged competition to Air India and India Airlines, and one of them is Air Deccan. It poses as a pioneer low-cost airline in the country. Air Deccan is owned and operated by Deccan Aviation Private Limited since 1995. Deccan Aviation is into chartered helicopter rentals, and expanded its expertise into commercial carriers.

Air Deccan’s positioning as a low-cost airline was frowned by many, as it introduced as much as 50% cheaper tickets than average. From day one, they have set-up operations to be a lean and fat-free. They were able to do this by optimizing their operations: no in-flight meals, single class fares, no mileage program, no posh lounges and electronic ticketing. The bulk of the spending goes to the fundamentals of operating a good airline: reliable operations from reputable providers (Avions de Transport Regionale, Rolls Royce and Honeywell), good work culture and highly skilled workforce. As the airline’s logo goes … Simplifly!

Air Sahara

Air Sahara began at the same time that the airline Industry in India opened for private companies in 1993. It is owned and operated by Sahara India Pariwar. The company is involved in banking, media and entertainment, housing and construction and poses as one of the biggest entrepreneurs in India. The airline company started with 2 Boeings and grew to 25 in less than 10 years. It also expanded its services to chartered helicopters. The company is currently undergoing restructuring to further improve operations.
