A Glimpse of Continental Airline

One of the most sought-after airlines in the world is the Continental Airlines. How it rose to one of the finest entails an interesting story.

It was in 1934 when Walter T. Varney established Continental Airlines with Louis Meller. The first flight took place from Colorado to Texas, with stopovers in New Mexico and Las Vegas on July 15, 1934. Continental Airlines was known as Varney Speed Lines by then. After a while, Varney handed the entire company to Mueller, who then sold shares to Mr. Robert Six. Robert Six would be the one to change the name to Continental Airlines.

The change of headquarters also took place, as it was in El Paso before transferred to Denver. Come World War II, it was the airlines that built and regulated the Denver Modification Center. This center was for B-29 Super Fortresses and B-17 Flying Fortresses.

Then in 1953, sixteen cities were added to its route. Most of these cities were from New Mexico and Texas. Then four years after, Continental launched "Gold Carpet Service" for its Chicago to Los Angeles flight.

Continental had its first Boeing 707-120 on June 8, 1959. It was the same year where it founded a "progressive maintenance" program that made possible its 16 hours a day, seven days a week travel.

Then in 1960s, Continental Airlines reinvented itself and came up with a new corporate identity, which included a new insignia that symbolized the jet in a orange, red and gold colors.

Another move took place when its headquarters transferred to Los Angeles. It supported the US-Vietnam War as it flew the troops to Southeast Asia.

Breakthrough happened when in 1970, it flew its first Boeing 747. Two years later, the DC-10 service began. Then by 1977, President Carter himself approved the Los Angeles to Australia and New Zealand route.

Other changes followed suit: merging with Texas International, reorganizing the Federal Bankruptcy Code Chapter 11, inaugurating service to Europe (which included flights from Newark to London, Munich, Madrid, Frankfurt and Paris), becoming the third biggest U.S. airline after consolidating with New York Air, Frontier and People Express, creating OnePass Frequent Flyer Program and forming an alliance with Scandinavian Airline Systems.

Recent changes include the launch of its blue and grey identity, purchasing brand-new Boeing aircrafts (777s, 757s, 767s and 737s) and unveiling its "Go Forward Plan" which is Fly to Win, Fund the Future, Making Reliability a Reality and Working Together.

It was in July 1995 when it got the largest profit in history, on a quarter basis.

Some of the awards reaped by Continental Airlines are the following: Best Airline for Flights to Western Europe, No.1 U.S-based Airline, Best Transatlantic Aitline, Best Foreign-flag Carrier to North America, TOp International Airline, Best Executive/Business Class, Best Transpacific Business Class Among U.S airlines, Airline of the Year, Best Airline Based in North America, Best North/South America Airline, among others.

Beat that?

Continental Airlines are known for its varied programs and services like the Business Programs, Contact Center Solutions, Cargo, Gift Account, Gift Certificates, Mundo Continental, Military and Government, Presidents Club Lounge, The Travel Club and Travel Money.

A lot of people turn to Continental Airlines for their travel needs. And why not? This is an airline tried-and-tested by time. So the next time one is hoping to country-hope, Continental Airline is the number one option.
