A Short History of the British Airline Industry
Have you ever dreamed of going to the United Kingdom? Did you ever wish to see the beauty of Birmingham, Newcastle, or Manchester?
If you do, then, it would be doubly better to go there through any of their British airlines. Arriving at your dream destination would not be that pleasurable as it was before after experiencing the lush customer service that the British airlines have given you.
Alongside with the most innovative and up-to-date air transportation in the world, British airlines started its humble beginnings way back 1910. It was on August 10 of that year when the British have decided to have a test flight on their first ever “civilian commercial” air travel. It entailed the trial of the “mail flight” or the distribution of letters via airmail from “Blackpool.”
After a year, the initial “air mail” service started its flying schedule involving Windsor and London flights. The first form of air transportation that was used then was a Bleriot monoplane and the Farman biplane. Unfortunately, the flight services used during this year survived for only three weeks.
By the time the world war has started, no other endeavor was initiated by the British government to succeed the earlier British flights.
It was only by the end of the “Great War” in 1917 when the “Royal Flying Corporation Communications Squadron” started its flight services carrying mails and other flight services for its VIPs. This was the first British flight service that was able to take to the air 227 flights between the Marquise in France and the Lympne along the British coast.
It can be noted here that the pioneer flights in the United Kingdom are mostly staged for mail transport in between lands and some other flights for post-war services.
By the time the war was over, the first 100% “civilian commercial are service” was established in April 1919. This initiated the start of the continuous proliferation of the British airline industry. Here, the French airline businesses started to grow continuously as major path was established between London and Paris.
The next biggest sensation as far as the British airline industry is concerned started on August 25, 1919 when the Aircraft Transport and Travel (AT&T) have commenced on its first international flight schedules on a daily basis. Its major route was from London to Paris and vice-versa.
Consequently, the birth of the British Airways initiated the true flying experience of most Britons. This is considered as the major airline in the United Kingdom. In fact, it was also one of the leading airlines in the global airline industry.
The British Airways has its major flights from Europe “across” the Atlantic. It has its main center in London Gatwick and Heatherow.
The merging of the minor British airline companies in 1935 gave way to the creation of British Airways Ltd. By that time, it was still privately owned air transportation corporation. From here, the British Airways and the Imperial Airways were taken into the public sector to develop the British Overseas Airways Corporation or the BOAC.
From that time on, many British airlines had followed the steps by developing well-known airlines like the British European Airways in 1949, Air France in 1974, etc.
From its humble early stages, British airlines had proven to surpass the many trials that had come their way. From the pre-war era up to the post war dilemmas, these different British airlines continued to develop and enhance their features and customer service in order to service the Britons, as well as the rest of the world as they strive for excellence within the airline industry.
